"On the road again" Feat. Henry Padovani, Dick Taylor @ Divan du Monde, Paris March 24 2014

"On the road again" @ Divan du Monde, Paris March 24 2014

free show, invit' only

Feat. Henry Padovani, Dick Taylor, Roya Arab & Kathy Mendonca

Concert exclusif "On the Road Again" !

on verra lundi soir
Hard to believe what I saw tonight, it's a free show and it's loaded with people, the balcony is closed, only for VIP's, people are having a blast.... What ?!?
First song is Canned Heat's "On the road again" that's the name of the band/reality-tv-show sponsored by a American Car brand that I won't name. The concept behind this band : take the musicians who left their band before  it became successful and make a "super-group" out of it. With rehearsals recorded and etc... for a reality show on French TV.
By listening to the first song , easy to hear that the band should have rehearsed a bit more, then they are playing a few more covers (Beatles, Lou Reed's "Vicious" , The Doors). 6-7 songs in all including a second version of "On the road again". Everything is recorded for that TV show.
The drum parts are kept to a minimum (not a great drummer, specially after seeing Carmine Appice in the very same club one week before) and the singer is lousy.
No disrespect to Henry Padovani (who I saw playing with his own band @ Gibus) and Dick Taylor (who I saw with the Pretty Things) and both band were great but the guys are probably desperate for cash for playing in such a reality show-band like this.
I've seen cover bands in bars much better than this.
Luckily there are some pretty girls in the audience , the only satisfying point that evening.
This is ridiculous and embarrassing. What went through their heads ?

Rodriguez @ Olympia, Paris March 16 2014

Rodriguez @ Olympia, Paris March 16 2014
The show has been long SOLD-OUT  without publicity... I guess lots of people couldn't get in when Sixto played 3 sold-out shows in Paris last year ( 2 shows @ Zénith and one show @ Cigale) and wanted to see him performed at least for once. The documentary "Sugarman" that went out in theaters last year was a massive success in France. So Sixto is still riding high...

Sixto Rodriguez is introduced on stage by a French man then a young kid , probably his grandson, as Sixto is traveling with the whole family.
Laid back start with 4-5 acoustic songs on his own then the band is joining in, just drums, guitar & bass, no keys or piano so arrangements are kept to a minimum.
Sixto smartly dressed with boots , leather pants, white shirts and beautiful black jacket, let's not forget the shades and Gibus hat. He is in fine spirit , talking with the audience, joking and...drinking water. His guitar playing is kept to a minimum but that's ok and the voice is still a bit freil but this concert is miles away from the catastrophe we had for both Zénith shows last year.
This one was much  better that the concert of La Cigale (from last year).
Sixto feels really comfortable on the stage this year.
A few cover songs " La Vie en Rose", "Fever", "Lucille", "Blue suede shoes" and probably a couple of others ("unchained melody") and his famous songs from both his fantastic records., including a couple that I've never heard him performed before...Franck Sinatra's "I 'm gonna live till I die" and another one
Great gig on Sixto's scale!

Vanilla Fudge @ Divan du Monde, Paris March 14 2014

Vanilla Fudge @ Divan du Monde, Paris March 14 2014

Not a lot of people on this friday night, around 300, the balcony is closed. Early start as the band is on stage at 8:15 sharp.Nice start with a slow and long version of The Beatles' "Ticket to ride".  Great sound, not too loud.
As you can guess the entire set consists of almost only cover songs as Vanilla Fudge were famous and had hit records but never with their own songs. The guys know how to play, technically it's perfect. The musicianship is very high. Mark Stein still has a fantastic voice.
Carmine is a monster on drums always doing the right thing, very demonstrative but not overplaying.  Maybe the low point of the show is the arrangement of the songs that is sounding very dated, typically the kind of things from the late 60's-early 70's. with lots of breaks and instumental parts
Now I know why Led Zeppelin became so successful and Vanilla Fudge just vanish after a few records specially after hearing their version of "Dazed & Confused" wich was technically perfect but lacking "feeling".
Overall good gig but it could have been so much better.
The whole band went to the merchandise table to sign anything you wanted and were VERY nice with everybody, which is very rare nowadays. So a big "Thank you" to them.
